Geology Quality Assurance Lead (QAL)

What you'll do

You supervise quality across geology and earth-science AI training. You review AI-written geology explanations, hazard and climate summaries, and map or data interpretations, and you check the work of trainers and QAs against project rubrics. You flag claims that are overconfident, geologically impossible or poorly supported, and you answer contributors' questions on timescales, rock and mineral identification, earth systems and spatial reasoning.

The management layer is substantial: Discord updates on guideline changes, onboarding calls, chasing inactive contributors, and maintaining style guides, trackers, calibration tasks and honeypots.

Who fits

  • Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in geology, earth sciences, geoscience, environmental science, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, paleontology, oceanography or a close field
  • 3+ years in earth science research, teaching, fieldwork, environmental consulting, geospatial analysis or science communication
  • Command of plate tectonics, the rock cycle, mineralogy, stratigraphy, structural geology, geomorphology, hazards, climate and hydrology
  • Preferred: GIS, remote sensing, geologic mapping, core or log interpretation, geochemical data, Python or R
  • Strongly preferred: experience leading remote teams; AI training or LLM evaluation is a strong plus

What it pays

SME Careers lists up to $70 an hour, with no floor. For comparison, the same company lists its Go and German team leads at $70 and $60, so lead roles are not uniformly priced. The ad does not say how payment is made or how often; the hiring process and payout terms SME publishes are covered on the SuperAnnotate page.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Earth science is a niche subject, so qualified reviewers are scarce
  • Pay band reflects a lead role, and the work mixes science, writing and coordination
  • The ad states the selection steps: an AI interview, a domain-specific task and a recruiter interview

Less good:

  • United States only
  • The ad says there is no immediate project; you are contacted when relevant opportunities arise
  • Team-lead time (calls, DMs, follow-ups) sits alongside review work and the ad does not say how it is billed

About this listing

Listed on SME Careers, the site where SuperAnnotate hires subject matter experts, and read from its jobs board on 27 October 2026. The board gives no posting date, so we cannot say how long it has been up. Pay, duties and requirements are SME's own text; the commentary is ours. See SuperAnnotate.
