Skills
  • media law
  • publishing rights
  • content licensing
  • fcc regulation
  • first amendment review
  • legal reasoning

What you'll do

You answer media, publishing and communications law questions the way you would for a client, then write down why. The scenarios come from content licensing, broadcast regulation and pre-publication review, with rights clearance and regulatory compliance as recurring themes. Part of the job is saying where a question is unsettled, contested between jurisdictions, or turns on facts that would change the answer.

You also review other contributors' work for legal accuracy and clarity, and flag badly framed scenarios to project coordinators instead of resolving them silently. The work is remote and contract-based.

What you need

  • A J.D. and active US bar admission in good standing
  • 5+ years of substantive media or communications law practice, hands-on rather than supervisory-only or adjacent
  • A corporate law foundation, ideally built at a Vault 100 firm
  • Experience in media and entertainment transactions, publishing rights, or FCC communications regulatory matters

The location line says the role is open worldwide, provided you hold an active US bar admission. That is a licensing requirement, not a residence one, so no country list is set.

What it pays

micro1 lists $140–400/hour for this role. The ad does not say what decides where in that band you land, whether pay is hourly or per task, or how often contractors are paid, so treat the range as a published band rather than a rate you can count on.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Open worldwide for anyone with an active US bar admission
  • Five openings, flagged high demand
  • No AI experience is required; the ad says domain knowledge is what counts
  • Reasoning counts as much as conclusions, which suits lawyers who like to show their working

Less good:

  • The bar is high: five years of hands-on practice plus a corporate foundation, with a Vault 100 background preferred
  • The selection process has four steps (screening questions, an AI interview, profile review, onboarding), and the ad gives no timeline
  • The ad does not state weekly hours, project length or payment schedule
  • Narrow niche: transactional or regulatory experience outside media and communications is not what is being asked for
