Egocentric Video Data Collector: South Africa (Insta360 X5 Required)
Rex.Zone: pay and who it accepts · Posted
What you'll do
You wear an Insta360 X5 on your head and record continuous first-person video, about 10 minutes at a time, while you go about normal life in South Africa. The ad lists cooking, cleaning, laundry, working or studying, shopping and errands, commuting and walking, gardening, drawing or playing music, and pet care as typical activities. It is explicitly not acting and not scripted: the aim is realistic footage from the wearer's own point of view, the kind of data used to train AI that has to understand daily human activity.
This is the South Africa branch of Rex.Zone's first-person video project, and at $40/hour it has the lowest rate of the six country versions. The footage shows a South African home, street or workplace from the wearer's eye line.
You also log basic information per recording (the activity and the setting), follow the camera setup instructions, record in eligible home, outdoor and sometimes commercial settings, and complete training and sample recordings before full production starts. The work is flexible and project-based.
What you need
- Residence in South Africa; the ad is limited to it
- Your own Insta360 X5 (the ad calls it required)
- Willingness to be recorded going about everyday routines and to follow the project's privacy, consent and data collection rules
- Time to complete training and sample recordings first
What it pays
The ad states $40/hour, a single flat figure rather than a range. That is well below the same project in other countries: $95 for the United Kingdom, $100 for Canada, $110 for Australia and New Zealand, and $120 for Singapore. The ad does not say why the rates differ. It does not say how or when payment is made.
Worth knowing
Good:
- $40/hour for unscripted daily activity, with no degree or prior experience listed
- You record your own life, so there is no subject-matter expertise to prove
Less good:
- The lowest rate of the six country versions, a third of the Singapore rate
- The Insta360 X5 is required and the ad does not say whether Rex.Zone supplies or reimburses it, so the camera is a cost to weigh against a $40 rate
