Anthropology Quality Assurance Lead (QAL)

What you'll do

This is a lead role, not a reviewing seat. You oversee the people who write and check anthropology training data: you spot-check their items, give feedback in direct messages, answer their questions on Discord, and chase contributors who have gone quiet. You also keep the documentation (style guides, FAQs, trackers, calibration tasks, honeypots) and run onboarding calls.

The subject content is the hard part to get right. You are looking for ethnocentrism, stereotyping, outdated terminology, unsupported generalisations and ethically shaky framing in what the AI and the trainers produce, across ethnography, archaeology, human evolution, kinship and representation.

Who fits

  • A bachelor's, master's or PhD in anthropology or a close field (cultural, biological or linguistic anthropology, archaeology, sociology, area studies, museum studies)
  • Three or more years in anthropology research, teaching, ethnography, archaeology, museum or heritage work, cultural analysis or fieldwork
  • Strong grasp of theory, cultural relativism, ethnographic methods and ethics
  • Comfort with Discord, Google Sheets and Docs, trackers and dashboards
  • Experience leading or supporting remote teams is strongly preferred

Earlier AI training, LLM evaluation, cultural sensitivity review or rubric-based review is a strong plus.

The role is open to applicants in the United States only.

What it pays

SME's listing says up to $65 an hour with no floor. That is the same ceiling as its Accountant role and well below its Astronomer QAL role ($110), so QAL pay clearly depends on the field. The listing does not state how or when you are paid; the company page covers SME's Deel payout cycle.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Pays for judgment on cultural and ethical nuance, which is rare in AI data work
  • Documentation and onboarding duties suit people who like building process
  • Humanities and social science backgrounds are the explicit target

Less good:

  • Selection runs through an AI interview, a domain-specific task and a recruiter interview, which is longer than the expert roles
  • No immediate project is attached
  • Open to the US only, and up to $65 is a ceiling

About this listing

Posted on SME Careers (sme.careers), where SuperAnnotate hires subject matter experts, and read on 27 October 2026. The board gives no posting date. The duties, requirements and pay are SME's own text; the comparisons and commentary are ours. The interview, Deel contract, bootcamp and time tracking are covered on the company page rather than repeated here. The ad says selection involves an AI interview, a domain-specific task and an interview with a recruiter. The ad says there is no immediate project for this role; qualified applicants are among the first contacted when relevant work opens, which also gives access to future projects in the expert network.
