Materials Scientist

What you'll do

You check the materials science an AI model produces for scientific accuracy, physical plausibility, unit consistency and sound microstructure-property reasoning. The ad lists topic areas including metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, phase diagrams, heat treatment, mechanical testing, corrosion, nanomaterials and characterization. You write gold-standard prompts and answers, rank AI outputs, and flag hallucinated properties, flawed processing advice and unsafe design assumptions. Work is remote and hourly.

Who fits

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in materials science or engineering, mechanical or chemical engineering, metallurgy, polymer science, nanotechnology or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years in materials research, engineering, lab work, manufacturing, teaching, technical writing or academic review
  • Deep understanding of structure-property relationships, crystal structures, phase diagrams and heat treatment
  • English at C1 or above

AI training or scientific QA experience is strongly preferred. The ad sets no experience level; we read 3+ years as a junior-to-mid bar.

What it pays

The ad says up to $95 an hour, second only to the Medical Doctor (Specialist) role in this batch. It is a maximum, and the ad does not state a typical rate. Payment terms and the hiring process are covered on the company page.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • One of the highest published ceilings for a science role
  • Engineering experience, teaching or lab work all count toward the 3 years
  • Open in 27 countries

Less good:

  • The country list is mostly Western Europe, North America and Australasia; check it before applying
  • The ad does not say whether a project is running now
  • Hours are not published
