Nuclear & Radiological Safety Expert for AI Model Audit
What you'll do
You sit on a small panel of nuclear and radiological professionals who audit how AI models handle sensitive questions in the field. Each task shows one user request and the answers three different models gave. You classify the request as benign, dual-use or adversarial, mark each answer safe or unsafe and say why, rank the three, and write the answer the model should have given. For dual-use requests you also note what makes the request sensitive, what legitimate purpose it serves and who should be able to get an answer.
The requests are meant to be realistic: the questions reactor engineers, health physicists, regulators, students and occasionally bad actors really ask. The ad stresses that wrongly refusing an ordinary professional question counts as an error just as much as letting a dangerous one through. The work calls for judgment about what to share.
Who fits
- Nuclear engineers and reactor physicists, safeguards and nonproliferation specialists (IAEA, NRC or equivalent, export control, national labs), health physicists and radiation safety officers, radiochemists, or former military or government nuclear staff
- Usually a relevant degree plus five or more years of professional experience
- Experience reviewing technical work against a standard (licensing, inspection, peer review) or AI red teaming is a strong plus
The role is open only to citizens or residents of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the European Union. The board lists 30 countries across those regions.
What it pays
Up to $90 an hour on an hourly contract, per the ad, which ties the Nurse Practitioner listing for the highest ceiling in this batch. The ad does not say how an individual rate is set.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Small panel and a specialist niche, so little competition from general reviewers
- Rewards calibrated judgment on both over-refusal and under-refusal, not just caution
- Remote
Less good:
- Narrow eligibility; many nuclear professionals outside those regions cannot apply
- Sensitive subject matter, so expect careful vetting on top of the usual process
- No hours or project length published; a "small panel" implies limited seats
