What you'll do
You work through inpatient medical records the way a hospital coder would, with the output feeding an AI training project rather than a claim. That means ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding, choosing the principal and secondary diagnoses, sequencing them under the Official Guidelines and assigning Present on Admission indicators. You also validate the MS-DRG, including whether the CCs and MCCs are supported, and flag hospital-acquired conditions and patient safety indicators.
The AI side is a second layer. You evaluate AI-generated clinical notes and summaries against real documentation and coding standards, code the diagnostic and procedural information the AI produces, and write clear feedback on coding errors and complex cases so the model improves. The work is remote and contract-based.
What you need
- Active certification in one of CIC or CCS, or another AHIMA or AAPC coding credential (RHIA, RHIT and COC are named)
- Inpatient ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding experience
- Access to current official ICD-10-CM/PCS code books and Coding Clinic guidance
- A current role in inpatient coding, clinical documentation improvement or a closely related documentation job
- At least 10 hours a week of availability
The ad lists all of these as preferred rather than strictly required. The scope (PCS coding and DRG validation) is inpatient work, so outpatient-only coders will find it a stretch.
What it pays
$50–70/hour, micro1's published band for this listing. The ad does not say how the rate is set inside the band, how many hours are on offer beyond the 10-hour minimum, or how long the project runs. Payment method and schedule are not published on the listing.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A strong rate for remote coding work, in the same band as micro1's other inpatient coding listing
- 50 openings, flagged high demand
- Feedback on complex cases makes it more than production coding
- No prior AI experience is mentioned as a requirement
Less good:
- Limited to US-based applicants
- You bring your own current code books and guidance
- Inpatient-only scope; outpatient coders will struggle
- No project length, weekly cap or customer is published; contractor terms with no benefits
About this listing
Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal on 20 October 2026 and read there the same day, when it was marked new and flagged as high demand. It covers the same inpatient territory as Medical Coder (CCS / CIC), which pays the same $50–70/hour; the ad does not say whether they are the same project, so check before applying to both. See micro1.
